CWSA Extends Condolences On the Passing of Wheelchair Basketball Coach Jerry Tonello

The Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association extends its condolences on the loss of wheelchair basketball coach Jerry Tonello, who passed away yesterday from brain cancer at the age of 59. Tonello was a long-time coach, mentor and player who was passionate both about the game and about getting the most out of his athletes.

“Jerry Tonello made a huge contribution to the Canadian sport system and will be missed,” said CWSA CEO Cathy Cadieux. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his friends and our colleagues at Wheelchair Basketball Canada at this time.”

Athletes Selected for Wheelchair Rugby Prospects Camp

Congratulations to the eight athletes selected to attend the Wheelchair Rugby Canada Prospects Camp at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre this week. The Prospects camp is aimed at athletes at the beginning of their wheelchair rugby career. Participants will participate in on-court sessions led by Adam Frost and learn how to lead a high-performance lifestyle.

Team Canada to Hold Open Practice Before Paralympic Test Event

(Feb 15th - DORCHESTER, ON) The Canadian wheelchair rugby team will host an open practice during their staging camp in Dorchester on Saturday, Feb. 20th before the team travels to Rio for a Paralympic test event. Media is invited to capture visuals and interview Team Canada athletes and coaches.

The Paralympic Test Event will be held in wheelchair rugby’s Paralympic venue and will allow Team Canada to compete against teams from Australia, Great Britain and Brazil. Canada is currently ranked number one in the world.

(Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) – Canada’s wheelchair rugby team will begin its quest for gold at a test event in Rio this weekend. Team Canada, which is currently ranked #1 in the world, will face off against Australia, Great Britain and Brazil in its Paralympic venue.

“It’s fitting that our road to gold begins here,” said head coach Kevin Orr. “Playing against some of the best teams in the world in the venue we’ll actually be competing in is an amazing opportunity.”

Trevor Hirschfield Named Sport BC Athlete With a Disability of the Year

Congratulations to Trevor Hirschfield on being named Sport BC’s Athlete With a Disability of the Year. Hirschfield received the honour at Sport BC’s Athlete of the Year 50th Anniversary Gala this week.

“We are so proud of all Trevor has accomplished on and off the court,” said Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association CEO Cathy Cadieux. “We can’t wait to see what he accomplishes in 2016 as we go for gold in Rio.”

Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association Announces the Return of the Bridging the Gap Program

The Canadian Wheelchair Sports Association is pleased to announce that the Bridging the Gap program has been reinstated. The nationwide “first contact” program introduced hundreds of people with disabilities to wheelchair sports every year through Have a Go days, beginners programs, equipment loans and peer mentorship programs. It was responsible for introducing Paralympians like Sarah Hunter and Trevor Hirschfield to wheelchair sports.

Montreal To Host the 2016 Canadian Wheelchair Rugby Championships

Eleven teams from seven provinces will compete in Montreal from May 27-29 at the 2016 Canadian Wheelchair Rugby Championships. The event will take place at the Centre Pierre-Charbonneau and will be hosted by Parasports Quebec. Admission is free.

Quebec will field both a Division 1 and a Division 2 team. The Division 1 team features current national team athletes Patrice Simard and Fabien Lavoie.

Ontario Undefeated After Day 1 of the 2016 Canadian Wheelchair Rugby Championship

(Montreal, QC) – The Ontario Thunder and the Ontario Lightning created a storm on the first day of the 2016 Canadian Wheelchair Rugby Championship. Both teams went 2-0 in their divisions. Saskatchewan and Alberta B are also undefeated.

Team BC, the reigning champions, went 1-1 after being defeated 54-51 by Alberta. They will look to get a win against Ontario tomorrow.

(Montreal, QC) – The Ontario Thunder and Team BC will once again face off for the Campbell Cup at the 2016 Canadian Wheelchair Rugby Championship. This will be the sixth year in a row that the two teams have been in the gold medal game. The match will start on Sunday at 2 pm at the Centre Pierre-Charbonneau.

Both teams have several national team athletes on their rosters. Trevor Hirschfield, Ian Chan, Byron Green and Travis Murao play for Team BC, while David Willsie, Garett Hickling, Patrice Dagenais and Cody Caldwell play for the Thunder.

Ontario Thunder Win the 2016 Coloplast Canadian Wheelchair Rugby Championship

(Montreal, QC) – The Ontario Thunder beat Team BC 53-47 to win the Campbell Cup at the 2016 Coloplast Canadian Wheelchair Rugby Championship. This is the fifth time in six years that the Thunder has won the title. Team Alberta won the bronze medal with a 60-51 victory over Quebec.

Though BC had lost key players to injury, 16-year-old newcomer Joel Ewert (Prince George, BC) stepped up and showed amazing composure against veteran national team athletes. He played the entire game.

Canada Claims First 2016 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament Victory Over Sweden

(Richmond, BC – June 23rd) Team Canada claimed a 54-44 win over Sweden today to kick off its 2016 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament campaign.

Though Canada started strong, Sweden brought the game back to a 26-26 tie at halftime. To start the third, Coach Orr subbed in Zak Madell, Miranda Biletski, Mike Whitehead and Trevor Hirschfield. The lineup quickly forced four turnovers to build a lead. Canada never looked back, finishing the game with a double-digit lead.

(RICHMOND, BC – June 24) After winning a tough battle against Great Britain earlier in the day, Canada fell against Japan (#3) to go 2-1 at the 2016 Canada Cup International Wheelchair Rugby Tournament.

Though Canada took an early lead, Daisuke Ikezaki and Yukinobu Ike forced several Canadian turnovers to keep the lead see-sawing. At the half, Canada held a narrow 30-29 lead.

There’s less than a month to go before the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, and we can’t wait to cheer on Team Canada. The IWRF has released the pools and the game schedule. The webcast and broadcast schedules have not been released, but we’ll give you that information when it becomes available. Either way, we’ll be providing full social media coverage through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
