Wheelchair Rugby Canada Announces Team for the 2018 Canada Cup

Wheelchair Rugby Canada is proud to announce the 12 athletes selected to Team Canada for the 2018 Canada Cup in Richmond, BC from June 14-17.

The Canadian roster features seven Paralympians who represented Canada at Rio 2016 in Cody Caldwell (Peterborough, Ont.), Patrice Dagenais (Embrun, Ont.) Trevor Hirschfield (Parksville, B.C.), Fabien Lavoie (Quebec City, Que.), Travis Murao (Toronto, Ont.), Patrice Simard (Quebec City, Que.) and Mike Whitehead (Windsor, Ont.).

DAY 1 - Canada Opens with a Win

The first day of the Canada Cup featured plenty of exciting tries, big hits and an upset in overtime. Here’s our recap of Day 1.

Game #1 Canada v Sweden

The hosts started their 2018 Canada Cup campaign with a come-from behind win over Sweden in front of an energetic crowd at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

The first quarter was very close as both teams traded tries and went into the first intermission tied at 12.

DAY 2 - Canada beats Denmark, loses to Japan

The second day of the 2018 Canada Cup saw many close games, as the hosts got a win in front of a full house, the Americans pulled ahead from the pack and Australia and Denmark both earned their first wins.

Wheelchair Rugby Canada Announces Agreement with Misawa City, Japan

(RICHMOND, BC – June 17, 2018) Wheelchair Rugby Canada announced today an agreement with Misawa City in Japan that confirms Misawa City will host Team Canada for up to five training camps over the next two years in the lead up to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

A ceremonial signing of the agreement between Catherine Cadieux, CEO of Wheelchair Rugby Canada and Kazumasa Taneichi, the Mayor of Misawa City, was held on June 17th during the closing ceremonies of the 2018 Canada Cup.

The United States have won the 2018 Canada Cup, beating Japan 56-53 in the gold medal game.

This marks the sixth title in six appearances at the Canada Cup for Team USA who went a perfect 6-0 in the competition.

The game started off tight and the score was at 13 at the end of the first quarter, but the tide started to turn in the second quarter. The Americans forced several turnovers made Japan burn three timeouts by halftime, which they entered with  a three-try lead courtesy of an Aoki try with 0.1 seconds left in the first half.
